Excellent research post opportunity – Senior Research Associate in Healthcare Law at Bristol University

The University of Bristol is looking for a Senior Research Associate in Healthcare Law will be based in the Centre for Health, Law, and Society (within the University of Bristol Law School) and carry out socio-legal research as part of the team working on a Wellcome Trust funded Balancing Best Interests in Healthcare, Ethics and Law (BABEL) project. This law and empirical bioethics project commenced in Autumn 2018 and is a collaboration between the Centre for Health, Law, and Society in the Law School and the Centre for Ethics in Medicine (within Bristol Medical School).  [Editorial Note, as a member of the Advisory Board, and with no bias or conflict of interest, I can tell you it is a fantastically interesting and important project!]

What will you be doing?

You will primarily focus on best interests and healthcare law (i.e. BABEL Law Work Stream 2). You will be finalising literature reviews and publications, as well as undertaking empirical (qualitative) research with a range of legal personnel involved in best interest decision making. In the final phase of the project you will bring together findings from the previous phases across the project to form recommendations for future policy and practice.

You should apply if

You have a PhD or equivalent in Law/ Socio-Legal Studies (related to the research area) and a good knowledge of healthcare law, in particular mental health and capacity law as it relates to adults and children. You should have significant experience of undertaking legal and qualitative social science research and be able to produce excellent research leading to publications. The role requires a high level of oral and written communication skills, including an ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and accessibly and to write reports. You also need to be able to work collaboratively with colleagues from various disciplines as well as being able to work independently and show initiative. You should be well organised and flexible, with good time-management and IT skills.
