Eleanore Fritze, a deeply impressive lawyer from Victoria in Australia, has written a fascinating, and compelling, report entitled “Shining a Light Behind Closed Doors,” exploring how lawyers can best protect the human rights and dignity of people with disabilities who have been detained in closed environments for compulsory treatment. The report, written during the course of her Churchill Trust fellowship, is now available here. Whilst written with a view to improving practice in her native Victoria, Eleanore’s research makes important reading for lawyers in other jurisdictions: for those in England and Wales as much as anything else for the pertinent critiques she offers of our system from her time spent here in 2015.
